Definitely a step up from Doom 1 but still far from perfect. Doom 2 significantly improves on the original thanks to all the new additions to the enemy roster, and the maps are on average better, but the lows are also lower. The music also suffers from not really having any bangers aside from Running from Evil and Into Sandy's City, and even then they don't reach the peak of the best Doom 1 tracks (although saying doom 1 had a great soundtrack isn't exactly accurate either). I'd highly suggest using the MiD the Way id Did midi pack if you wanna play through Doom 2, there's some real bangers in there and having some better music to listen to (alongside no repeats) helps make the lowest of lows a bit more enjoyable.
