Welcome to Starcannon399's Doom Halloween special! Part 4, Wormwood IV: The Final Chapter! Well, I can at least say I'm glad that title is a lie. Wormwood 4 is weird. Easily the longest in the entire series, all without any bonus maps, Wormwood 4 is less ultimate conclusion and more strange science experiment. With a surprise third guest in dannebubinga there's even more added map variety and while most of them are as good as always, the very lengthy buildup feels out of place compared to the old wormwood style. There's some strange maps in here too. Tightly wound slaughtermaps, weird annoying gimmick maps, Ribbiks even used some dehacked magic in order to create a survival horror map in doom (it's not very good). There are some neat little experiences here just like with the other wormwood openers, but unfortunately there's no big final RIbbiks showstopper to tie the whole thing together. danne's final map is fine at best, starting as a chaotic clusterfuck before you then spend the rest of the map climbing a square staircase of mini-cyberdemons and revenants. If it weren't for the crazy first few minutes this map could work just as well in the opener slot as any other map in here. Wormwood 4's dehacked changes are barely used at all, with the instakill demon enemy from Ribbiks' survival horror map and a golden BFG with infinite ammo that also only appears in one map. Wormwood 4 barely even feels all that halloween-y aside from an occasional color theme of green and orange. I said Wormwood 3's final map disappointed me but it still had everything a wormwood finale needed, while here it's just a disconnected collection of vaguely green and orange maps that ends on a nothingburger. In the end Wormwood 4 feels more like an experimental spinoff rather than a climactic final sendoff to the series. Again, very glad to know this isn't how the series ended.
