Ever since I really started getting into doom I always wondered what the best "first mapset" would be. Something good to show anyone mildly interested in classic doom stuff that would make for a good test run to hopefully get them hooked. And finally, I found it. Overboard might not make any top ten best wads lists, but nothing I've played so far has managed to pack so much quality, creativity, variety, and replayability all into a single package. It may only be 6 maps, but each and every one of them is unique and filled to the brim with fun little ideas. A demon infested cruise ship, a mini-plutonia island packed with enemies, a cramped and chaotic fight through the inside of a submarine, a flood of cacodemons in an active volcano, an archvile led demonic ritual in an alternate dimension, and a triumphant assault up the beach to take down a whole castle full of demons. Each and every map is such a joy to play that once you're done it's hard not to want more. And thankfully, there is! Overboard (just like the first real doom wad I ever played) has a special new game plus mode, remixing every map to be even harder and more chaotic, breathing new life into each and every map all without many major changes to their physical layout. I can't imagine a better mapset to use when introducing doom to potential new players, and the pure passion and creativity in Overboard will appeal to practically anyone regardless of if you had this wad thrown at you by someone hoping to get you interested, or if you've been playing doom for ages and are looking for a great mini-adventure to blast through in an hour or so. If mouldy's level design really is this good then damn I guess I really have to play Going Down soon.
