A thing I really need to remember to do is just, drop stuff when I feel like it's turning into a slog. I think my tendency to always review EVERYTHING) has started to push me to slog through things for the sake of saying that I finished it. It happened with plenty of other wads, and it almost happened with Syringe too. Speaking of, yeah it's kinda eh. I think vanilla style wads tend to have this effect on me, where they just feel really eh thanks to a near total lack of interesting custom visuals and less experimental wacky features. Syringe just sorta felt like a more polished version of Arrival (fitting, considering Arrival's creator also worked on Syringe), where the levels just didn't really hit right despite not being glaringly terrible. The music is nice at least, and it's short enough that if you end up liking it, it'll be a nice afternoon's worth of doom, but I'm moving on to something else.
