More Waffle House! After their first project was mostly just a hodgepodge of random ideas, the return of Waffle House Team saw them create a smaller scale but much more focused mapset instead. Snow Way Home adds special slippery ice floors to supplement the winter-y aesthetic, which makes for an interesting twist on standard Doom combat. I was really surprised to see A2Rob make an appearance in this wad, and his Map 1 "Ice'Em" makes for a propulsive and energetic opening act for your snowy adventure. Death Bear's Map 2 "Where Bears Dream of Waffles" stands out really awkwardly compared to the rest of the set, being a massively underdetailed and underpopulated frozen blood cave... thing?? with some awkward encounters and basically mandatory damaging floor traversal. Myolden's Map 3 "Blue Blood" puts the frozen floor to the test, nearly the entire map is covered in it, putting the wonky physics effects it has on both you and the demons on full display, and apparently contains a secret exit that I completely missed until after finishing the rest of the wad. NecrumWarrior's Map 31 "My Boy Punch-Out Got Robbed" is just an awkward berserk only map with some simplistic visuals and not especially enjoyable combat, but it's at least short. The middle chunk of Snow Way Home is fairly solid, A2Rob's second contribution with Map 5 "The Fringe" makes for a slightly spooky take on the winter-y vibe, and Muumi's Map 6 "A Song of Ice and Fireblu" is predictably nice to look at but is a little clunky on the gameplay side. LVENdead's Map 7 "Avalanche" takes his mastery of atmosphere and applies it fantastically to the snowy setting, taking you through a crumbling set of ancient castle ruins during a fierce snowstorm with some pretty fantastic architecture and another LVENdead original midi to keep you warm. Then taviow's Map 8 "Cryogenics" is a singular icy floor room that dumps Revenants on you from all sides in the first half, and then several Cyberdemons and Archviles in the second half, topped off with one more jumpscare Cyberdemon blocking the exit switch. Truly the final map ever. Snow Way Home is a smidge better than Waffle House thanks to slightly better map design on average and having a unified theme, but it still feels like a wonky exhibition for an all-star cast of mappers.
