It's definitely rough in a few places but Pirate Doom has charm and variety to make up for it. The enemy reskins are fantastic (I especially like the steampunk arachnotrons), and the custom weapons are pretty fun to use, but map design is very all over the place. I appreciate the variety of settings and cool gimmicks, but Pirate Doom is designed very linearly, meaning you don't get most of the enemies or weapons until over halfway through the game, which results in a lot of the early maps being you killing imps and hitscanners with the pisol and shotgun which gets old pretty quick. A ton of the maps are also just really annoyingly dark for no reason, making it hard to notice enemies and items plus generally causing level navigation to be kinda unfun. Towards the end once the maps start making full use of all the enemies and weapons things get pretty fun, but it's too little to late by that point. It's worth checking out as a cute little distraction but the sluggish earlygame and annoying darkness prevents me from totally loving it.
