A damn impressive effort in both atmosphere and fight design, but it feels a tad bit over-praised. Formless Mother has one of the most unique vibes of any doom mapset I've ever seen, a skincrawling fleshy realm dripping with atmosphere that perfectly captures the dread and awe of such a place, and combined with some of the most fun and well designed slaughter fights I've ever played it's basically a guaranteed slam dunk, but the atmosphere part (at least for me) fades pretty quickly. The first minute or so you spend in this mapset will send shivers down your spine, but as soon as you start having groups of revenants and hell knights yelling at you, cyberdemons spamming rockets all over, and pain elementals incessantly spawning lost souls everywhere, it's basically impossible to be immersed in any of the horror-y vibe it's going for anymore, which only gets more and more true the further in you get, as fights get more and more challenging. It's still really well done atmosphere, and there are moments between fights (as well as a majority of the secret map) where the atmospheric elements still do shine very brightly, but it's all to easy to just get locked in on playing the game that it loses that initial dread and magic. The first two maps are very solid, but map 3 also feels like it goes on for far too long, it's already fairly lengthy before you get your hands on the BFG, and once you do there's a constant string of "is this the final fight? nope not yet..." that starts to make the experience pretty draining. Map 31 stands out a ton thanks to its unique thematic shift, and I think the focus on shorter, smaller scale, but more varied fights, all without ever handing you a BFG, works the best with the more atmospheric approach. If you're a fan of more slaughter-y combat you'll have a fantastic time with this one, and Treehouseminis' more generous powerup placement makes it a tad bit more approachable than others in the same genre.
