While it's a more consistent and less volatile experience compared to Doom 2 In City Only, Doom 2 In Rural Only does lack a lot of the same impact and variety. D2ICO played into my personal interests with its city theme and 6 episodes of 5 maps structure, but D2IRO's rural theme isn't really my thing as much, and it goes back to the usual 3 episodes of 10 maps structure. Episode 1 is pretty solid, the small town vibe is nice and there's some really pretty scenery, episode 2's countryside theme SOUNDS uninteresting but many of the mappers go for a spookier atmospheric theme which keeps it fresh, but episode 3's wilderness theme ends up feeling REALLY visually samey and a lot of the latter maps start devolving into setpiece slaughter which wasn't really the aspect of D2IRO that I enjoyed the most. There's still some nice maps in that final episode but it doesn't really land the way I wanted it to. I'd have an easier time recommending this one over D2ICO since it's much less uneven and has much higher overall map quality, but D2ICO's relentless variety and craziness makes me still prefer that wad a bit more.
