WAD #100!!!

If Eviternity 2 is the big celebration of Doom's incredible modding community that have kept the game alive all these decades later, then Amalgoom is the big celebration of those original first two games that made it all possible. The concept of fusing maps from Doom 1 and 2 together sounds simple, but what these mappers managed to do with these 30+ year old levels and textures is damn impressive. Iconic landmarks from different maps aren't just placed next to each other, they're mixed and layered to create something that's still recognizable, but very unique nonetheless, and it leads to some REALLY stunning looking levels. Same goes for the music too, these mashup/remixes are REALLY damn good sometimes, and manage to take a lot of songs from the original games I didn't care for and make some crazy bangers out of them. The maps can run a bit long sometimes, and the middle chunk definitely feels like it drags a bit, but Amalgoom's level design is always fun and interesting the entire way through. The final map kinda left a weird taste in my mouth though, the concept is pretty neat but the very lacking music, combined with the... let's say questionable choice for who the final boss should be, made me end the wad on a strange note, but I don't wanna let that ruin an otherwise really fantastic experience. I do highly recommend having actually played Doom 1 and 2 all the way through before checking this out, since a lot of the impact is lost if you don't actually get the references. Here's to me playing 100 more wads in the year to come!
